A beautiful, clear tone appears, I follow its PROGRESSION to a FREQUENCY that’s INAUDIBLE. I tap my pen and look up to see if I’ve got it right. A HIGHER tone appears, it moves away from me becoming THINNER and FINER. SILENCE. I tap my pen. Aide-mémoires are a series of photographic, typographic and text works relating to the ongoing performance project As if. As if uses hand gestures as a mnemonic devices and illustrative components in the recitation of an evolving chain of observations. These observations presents the difficulty of verbal and non-verbal communication as an everyday predicament, an opportunity for creative misunderstanding and the means for language to evolve. Each observation in As if has an equivalent Aide-memoire.
A selection of Aide-mémoires from As if were published by Book Works in Issue 5 of The Happy Hypocrite, edited by Maria Fusco.
