Why Work? began with the organisation of an alternative careers fair at Camden Arts Centre, London. The fair offered the general public free careers advice on career choices from four people working outside the careers advice profession: an evangelical minister, a life coach, a clairvoyant tarot card reader and an astrologer.

The second part of Why Work? became a thirty minute documentary commissioned by Camden Arts Centre. The video recorded a seventeen year-old girl’s attempts to resolve some of her questions on vocation during her gap year. The girl, Nell, attended appointments with a life coach, a psychic, an astrologer, a careers analyst, a graphologist and a New Deal advisor from a Job Centre. Each professional offers an opinion on why we work and prompts Nell to reflect on a series of questions concerning her background, particular skills, sources of inspiration and views on work.
